As we stand on the precipice of new opportunity and change, the Fool encourages us to relinquish our fear and take the vital step off the edge of the cliff.

Henry Miller once said, “All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous unpremeditated act without benefit of experience.”

None of us want to look foolish. But there come times in life when it is necessary to take a risk and try something different, or to go down a new path, even if it is strange and unfamiliar. Sometimes in order to change and evolve, we have to be willing to be the Fool.

The Fool Card

The Fool is the first of the twenty one cards in the Major Arcana. It represents untapped potential and what is unmanifest, yet contains within it the unlimited potential of the unconscious mind waiting to be discovered.

The archetype of the Fool is represented by the image of a youth starting out on a journey, looking to the sky as he is about to walk off a cliff. He holds in his hand a white rose, symbol of purity and innocence, and a small dog barks at his feet trying to warn him of potential dangers. Will he heed the warnings and turn back, or will he continue on towards the precipice undaunted?

These are some of the questions the Fool card asks if it appears in a reading. To what degree are we embracing our own innocence and naivete and accepting new opportunities and adventures that come our way? Perhaps it is time to adopt a new outlook on life, shed our inhibitions or outmoded beliefs and behaviors.

This might mean that we have to temporarily relinquish our control, or for once not be the ‘expert’ at something. But which is riskier - holding onto to our present position or perceptions and falling into stagnation, or risking the possibility that we might fail if we try something new or look stupid in the process?

The Gift of the Fool

The gift of the Fool is that it encourages us to approach our lives with fresh eyes and embrace the spirit of youthful enthusiasm in our endeavors. All opportunities for growth come with an inherent risk, and the Fool gives us the push to get beyond our self-imposed limitations and take that vital risk. The card is numbered with a circular O which is a reminder that life is cyclical. New beginnings always come around again and though we may reach a plateau or peak of experience we cannot stay there forever. New growth will have to start again in order to reach a new level of experience and awareness.

When the Fool Appears in a Tarot Reading

In a tarot reading, the position in which the Fool card appears can often add meaning to its tone. When it appears at the start of a reading, it can sometimes indicate that we might not be adequately prepared for our experiences. In such cases a more grounded, practical, and less impulsive approach is wise. The Fool appearing towards the end of a reading shows that we have learned from our experiences and that we will embark on new journeys armed with the lessons and wisdom we have accrued.

However, when the Fool appears in a spread its essential essence is a reminder to embrace light-heartedness, take ourselves less seriously, and to honor, and give voice to the spirit of play within.
